About Wilkes-Barre, PA

Our congregation is located in the bustling city of Wilkes-Barre, which is at the heart of Luzerne county, Pennslyvania along the banks of the Susquehanna River surrounded by the breathtaking Appalachian Mountains. Home to an area rich with history in a time where coal mining and industrialization were a major source of economic growth, the city was nicknamed "The Diamond City" in the 19th century upon the discovery of local anthracite coal mines in the Wyoming Valley. After the discovery of these coal mines, the city of Wilkes-Barre experienced an influx in businesses, industries and hundreds of thosands of immigrants who would call this proud city their home. Wilkes-Barre, PA sits only hours away from urban hotspots such as New York City and Philedelphia, PA and is mere minutes away from popular and beautiful outdoor hotspots, such as the grogeous Pocono mountains, Hickory Run State Park, and Ricketts Glen State Park, where hikers could experience 22 of NEPA's  breathtaking water falls along the famous falls trail.

Additonally, the city is in the center of many major educational institutions, such as King's College, Wilkes University, Luzerne County Community College, Penn State Wilkes-Barre, and Misericordia Univeristy. The Wilkes-Barre community is one that strives for constant improvement as an evergrowing community in the heart of the Wyoming Valley. Saint Peter's Lutheran Church carrys on this mission as part of the Wilkes-Barre community to strive and improve the quality of life for our neighbors by holding community events such as Trunk or Treat, where children within the community participate in trick or treating on the church grounds and are free to partake in holiday goodies as well as fun with family and friends as brothers and sisters in Christ.
